Celebrating Excellence in Math Education
Kimberly Hubbard, a committed math teacher at Wrens Elementary School in Wrens, Georgia, has been honored for her exceptional work in third grade math instruction. With over two decades of classroom teaching experience, Mrs. Hubbard continues to have a positive influence on her students and the broader school community.
A Focus on Building Math Foundations
Mrs. Hubbard believes that developing a strong math foundation early is key to student success in later years. According to Hubbard, "If you get the foundation early, then when you keep going in the 12th grade, college, it will be easy." She emphasizes the importance of focus and clarity in math learning, telling her students that, "math is fun, it’s easy, but you gotta be very focused and careful because the numbers will mess you up. Once you get the concept, the only thing that changes is the numbers."
Decades of Dedication at Wrens Elementary
Now in her 21st year at Wrens Elementary, Hubbard is deeply invested in the growth and development of her third grade students. "I want to be a positive influence for the kids," she states. "I love the kids. And so I just want to help them grow, make good decisions to be good life citizens." Her longstanding commitment exemplifies the impact experienced teachers can have on elementary school communities.
Promoting Multiplication Mastery and Home Support
Hubbard stresses the significance of mastering multiplication facts at an early stage. She encourages parents to help their children review multiplication over the summer. "So one thing that I would need help with is to go back to the old way and teach those kids the multiplication facts over the summer. So they won’t have problems with learning them and doing the concept all at the same time." This approach, according to Hubbard, can ease student learning and support the overall objectives of math education in the classroom.
From Business to the Classroom
Before becoming a math teacher, Hubbard worked in the business world. She finds teaching to be the most fulfilling job she has had. "Mostly everything I do is dealing with kids in some kind of capacity," Hubbard shares. "I’ve come out of the business world, I haven’t always been a teacher. But this is the most fulfilling job that I’ve had is teaching."
Looking to the Future
While Hubbard has considered retirement, she remains open to continuing her career at Wrens Elementary. "I think I’ve been saying that I was going to do like 6-more years. But I’m not sure. It’s just however my health holds out. And I’ll be around." Her passion for student learning and commitment to classroom teaching suggest that her positive influence will be felt for years to come.
