Stranger Things’ Hawkins Crew Faces Upside Down’s Full Wrath
The long-awaited fifth and final season of Stranger Things has just arrived. Netflix has released the official extended teaser trailer, and it’s everything we could have hoped for. We finally get a glimpse of the epic showdown we’ve been waiting for, Hawkins’ beloved champions against the shadowy forces of the Upside Down.
The teaser moves at a brisk pace. It quickly sets the atmosphere with images of the Upside Down slowly stretching its maw wider into Hawkins, the sound of demo-dogs slinking through the dark corridors, and explosions with fireballs from flamethrowers in the middle of a Hawkins Institute hallway. There’s also a notable shot of an armed and battle-ready Linda Hamilton, who looks like she just walked into an '80s horror flick. Hamilton will play the character of Dr. Kay, and it seems she’s arrived in Hawkins to join the battle.
Season 4 ended with a literal earth-shattering cliffhanger. Vecna—the mastermind behind all the madness—forcibly opened a massive gate, unleashing the Upside Down entirely into Hawkins. According to the teaser, Season 5 will pick up at some time after this moment. The end credits for the final season inform us that the events of Season 5 will take place in the fall of 1987. This also marks the third anniversary of Will Byers’ initial disappearance in the events of Season 1.
There will be eight episodes in the fifth and final season. However, the standard television episode will not be the standard for Stranger Things. Each of these eight episodes will be feature-length. The length of Stranger Things 5 will total roughly eight full Stranger Things movies.
According to the official season description, the stakes are high, and emotional investments are even higher. Hawkins has been scarred beyond repair by the opening of the Rifts. The gang is on a mission. Every Hawkins hero, new and old, is aligned with a singular goal: find and kill Vecna. But they don’t know where he is, and they don’t know what he’s doing or when he’ll strike. With the U.S. government locking down Hawkins with a military quarantine and redoubling efforts to find Eleven, she’s on the run again.
Fallen heroes like Eddie Munson have already been avenged or accounted for. The anniversary of Will’s disappearance is on everyone’s mind. And the stakes are higher than ever before. As the teaser clearly shows, this is going to be the final battle. A battle of wills with an enemy that is both darker and deadlier than anything Hawkins’ champions have fought before. The only chance of victory is every single ally, the full party, in it together for one last fight.
The Main Cast Will Be Back, Joined By Old Allies and New Ones
The Season 5 cast is a reunion of the core Stranger Things main cast, and several major recurring characters make an appearance as well. Amybeth McNulty returns as Vicki, while Gabriella Pizzolo makes a reappearance as Dustin’s girlfriend Suzie. Jamie Campbell Bower is back as Vecna, of course, the baddie with the killer growl that carried all of the Season 4 dread.
Veteran actors have been recruited to bring some of the season’s new allies to life. Linda Hamilton will play Dr. Kay, a character that Hawkins will most definitely need. The Hamilton casting will no doubt delight fans who grew up with her in iconic action roles like the Terminator and Tremors. Newcomers include Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers.
This teaser also sprinkles in a few moments that will be sure to get fans as excited as they are nostalgic. Lucas and others have found a way to keep themselves off the demo-dogs’ menu, hidden in a bit of a spot that feels strongly reminiscent of the kitchen sequence in Jurassic Park and its legendary velociraptor cameo. For those who like their terror to be more psychological, hearing Vecna’s guttural “found you” is more than enough to raise the hairs on the back of your neck.
However, there is one scene in this teaser that gives me all the emotions, and I wasn’t even sure I was going to see it in the final season. Eddie Munson’s gravestone is seen defaced with “Burn in hell” etched across the top. Eddie was killed in action in the finale of Season 4 and, despite all that he’s done, many in Hawkins still see him as a villain. Eddie was arguably the most gut-wrenching hero loss since Bob Newby in Season 2. The event hit me so hard that I binged on a classic horror to cheer up.
The other major discussion point is how Netflix will release the eight episodes. The Stranger Things machine is releasing Season 5 in three parts, and I’m sure most fans are less than pleased with this decision. Volume 1 will drop on November 26, 2025. Volume 2 will arrive a month later, on Christmas Day 2025, December 25, 2025. The appropriately timed for maximum emotional catharsis finale arrives on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025.
Essentially, the build-up to Hawkins’ last stand is going to be drawn out over the holiday season and will no doubt keep Stranger Things in pop culture headlines for weeks.
Season 5 means so much for long-time fans. This is the end of the saga of Stranger Things on Netflix. It’s the conclusion of a story that has spanned years, generations of characters, countless hours of theories, memes, and fan debates. As the teaser shows, this is it, the final ride. Every character arc, every loss, and every hard-fought victory have been saved to this point.
