LiveLung Augusta Offers Support for Lung Cancer Patients

Facing a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and isolating. LiveLung Augusta, a chapter of the nonprofit LiveLung, is committed to providing lung cancer support to patients and their caregivers. The organization works to connect those affected by lung cancer, raise cancer awareness, and educate the community about early detection.

The Mission and Growth of LiveLung

LiveLung began more than 20 years ago when founder Dusty Donaldson, a survivor herself, noticed a lack of lung cancer resources for patients and caregivers. "She realized that there were no resources for lung cancer patients or those impacted by lung cancer and their caregivers,” said Renée McCabe, a nurse navigator for lung cancer screening at Wellstar and member of LiveLung Augusta.

Since its founding, LiveLung has grown to nine chapters, including its Augusta chapter, serving as a key network for the cancer community.

Focus on Lung Cancer Screening and Early Detection

One of LiveLung Augusta's priorities is educating the public about the importance of lung cancer screening with a low dose CT scan. Screenings are offered at Wellstar MCG and are accessible even for those who do not meet standard criteria, as self-pay options are available. “Even if you don’t meet the criteria and you’re concerned, you can self-pay for a low-dose CT and it’s not very expensive,” McCabe explained.

Upcoming Event: Brennan Francois Shares His Story

LiveLung Augusta will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, October 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Kroc Center, located at 1833 Broad Street in Augusta. This event will feature Pastor and author Brennan Francois, who will deliver a message titled “No One Stands Alone,” reflecting on his cancer journey after his diagnosis in 2019.

Francois recounted that the isolating experience of waiting alone in the hospital after receiving his diagnosis inspired him to advocate for stronger support networks for lung cancer patients. His message includes the Filipino Kapwa concept, which speaks to shared responsibility and community: “Your problem is my problem and together we will get through this,” Francois explained.

Connecting the Cancer Community

Brennan Francois encourages not only those living with cancer but also cancer caregivers and supporters to join the group and build connections. He emphasizes the importance of shifting away from an individualistic mindset. “It’s important for us to recognize that we are stronger together,” Francois noted.

The event is free for all attendees and includes lunch. It is open to lung cancer patients, care partners, and anyone interested in supporting the local cancer community.
