Jurassic World Rebirth: Dinosaurs, DNA, and Death Await

The final trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth has arrived and is sure to get fans primed for what is expected to be a blockbuster over the Fourth of July weekend. The trailer for the film, which will be released July 2, 2025, from Universal Pictures, shows new characters preparing for a high-stakes mission on the island where the original Jurassic Park research team started their plans to revive the age of the dinosaurs. Led by actress Scarlett Johansson, the new mission is partially about finding and securing the last existing members of the largest land, sea, and air dinosaurs before they go extinct, but that effort will quickly collide with the vacation plans of one boating family.

Jurassic World Rebirth is the fourth film in the Jurassic World series of films, and the seventh in the overall Jurassic franchise that was first started in 1993 with Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. Gareth Edwards, who directed the 2014 film Godzilla, has taken on the task of directing this one. The screenplay was handled by David Koepp, who is known for penning the first Jurassic Park film, as well as the sequel, The Lost World (1997).

Jurassic World Rebirth: The Official Synopsis

The synopsis from Universal for the film begins: “Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s environment has become increasingly hostile to dinosaurs, forcing the last survivors of the most recent extinction into isolated and shrinking equatorial refuges designed to replicate their ancient, original habitats. Nestled within one of these lush, tropical biospheres are the three largest dinosaurs of land, sea, and air. Each creature hides within its DNA the genetic key to a miracle drug.”

Scarlett Johansson, who stars as Zora Bennett, is a covert operations specialist who is assigned to lead a team on a top-secret mission to recover that same miracle drug. On the way to that location, they inadvertently take a detour with a vacationing family of boaters when a sea dinosaur attack derails their expedition. The survivors must battle their way to safety through a seemingly deserted island that was once home to a Jurassic Park secret research island, as they fight to survive both the humans and the dinosaurs that island full of.

Meet the Cast of Jurassic World Rebirth

The Jurassic World Rebirth cast also includes actors such as Mahershala Ali, who plays Zora’s team leader; Rupert Friend as Martin Krebs, a pharmaceutical company representative with his agenda; Jonathan Bailey as paleontologist Henry Loomis; and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, who is Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked family. The rest of that family is played by actors Luna Blaise, David Iacano, and Audrina Miranda, all of whom portray Reuben’s children, while Bechir Sylvain rounds out the mission team. Ed Skrein and Philippine Velge both make appearances as well in undisclosed roles.

The new trailer uses quite a bit of the footage from the first trailer that was released earlier this year in February. So the message being portrayed by the action and visuals that fans can expect from the movie is being kept the same. The new trailer does begin, however, with a scene in a laboratory between a scientist and a worker who is in a hazmat suit. The scientist is trying to unlock the door to escape with the help of a team on the outside, but a T-Rex makes its way into the room and corners the worker in a closet. He frantically yells for help before he is mauled, a portent that the trailer will be all about fast-paced action and jump scares.

Fans also get to see the movie’s major set piece of an attempted theft of a pterosaur egg. It is likely a Quetzalcoatlus northropi, which is a prehistoric flying carnivore, but even one of the characters has to inform his team that this particular one is “the size of an F-16.” The old raptors are also visible in the trailer, but there is one new sea predator shown as well: a mosasaur. Dialogue reveals that this old island was used by those who worked on the early version of Jurassic Park to work with “the worst of the worst,” meaning the most intractable and aggressive dinosaurs that the team ever created.

Jurassic World Rebirth is supposed to be a soft reboot of the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World series, but this trailer makes it clear that the old themes are coming back, too. There is a return to the franchise’s beginning as they go back to the island where the original Jurassic Park research team was based to set up their dinosaur revival dreams and nightmares. That should conjure up some nostalgia from the early film for fans who have followed the movies all the way through, while the creatures that they encounter appear to be even more unpredictable.

As exciting as the trailers are, it will be interesting to see whether Rebirth will be a genuine reboot and reset of the series or simply another big action flick in the franchise. There are the requisite elements, though: an elite group of people being sent on a high-concept scientific mission, moral ambiguity, and a seeming ocean of dinosaur danger that could spill over at any moment. On the face of it, Johansson also looks like she could bring an additional layer of grittier, more tactical details to the usual throw-themselves-into-the-thick-of-it action from these characters.

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2, 2025, from Universal Pictures. The action film, which has a PG-13 rating, will likely be competing for viewers with the traditional Independence Day holiday blockbuster season activities, but should be a must-see for fans of dinosaurs.
