Marvel’s Ironheart Blends Crime Drama with Superhero Action

Ryan Coogler is on a roll. Fresh off the theatrical success of his latest movie Sinners, the Black director is already on the move again, this time prepping Ironheart, a limited Marvel series that has just dropped a sleek new trailer ahead of its June 2025 premiere.

A six-episode series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ironheart stars Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart, a teenage engineering whiz and a protégé of Tony Stark in the comics. It will be the last TV addition to the MCU’s Phase Five.

Announced back in December 2020, the show was originally expected to premiere in 2023. A few years later, however, Marvel reworked its long-term content strategy, shrinking the number of movies and shows it would release in a given year. Among other reasons, the studio cited concerns over saturation in the market for the move. As a result, the premiere was delayed to this summer. Footage first shown at the 2024 D23 convention suggested that the series would be “a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center,” which could also mean a darker and grittier entry than many MCU series before it.

Ironheart centers on Riri Williams, who was first introduced on screen in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In that film, she gets caught in a conflict with Namor and his blue-skinned army after building a vibranium detector as a project for her MIT classes. The tech-savvy teen later bonds with Shuri over a shared love of science, and eventually constructs her armored suit in Tony Stark’s image to help Wakanda in its fight for survival. By the time peace returns to the Dora Milaje’s home, she has no choice but to abandon the suit with the Wakandans and return to MIT.

A Coming-of-Age Story Rooted in Science and Crime Drama

In Ironheart, Riri returns to Chicago shortly after the conclusion of Wakanda Forever. According to the official synopsis, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”

The series also features Lyric Ross as Riri’s best friend Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich as Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana as Cousin John; Matthew Elam as Xavier Washington; and Anji White as Ronnie, Riri’s mother. Joining the cast as well is Shea Couleé as Slug. The character of the dean of MIT, Jim Rash, is also confirmed to return, reprising his role first seen in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen is also confirmed for a role, but has not yet been shown or described.

The new trailer does not hold back. It immediately shows Riri breaking into a now-closed pizza place, whereupon she ends up trapped inside a poison-filled elevator that will automatically close in two minutes. Little does she know at the time, however, that this is a test—or, as her tormentor calls it, an “interview”—orchestrated by The Hood. As Riri pleads with him over the intercom, he chides that she is going to die of oxygen deprivation unless she hacks into the machine with a mask attached to a box on one of the floors. Riri refuses to give in and instead improvises an alternate escape plan.

Flattered by her presence of mind, The Hood (Anthony Ramos) extends an invitation for her to join him on his mischievous endeavors, an offer Riri more than eagerly accepts once she’s assured of the fact that they are criminals. She, for her part, is especially interested in creating something “iconic” and proving that she can be more than just a “little iron-making kid.” Still, Riri’s acceptance of The Hood’s offer comes with reservations as her friend Natalie warns her of his sketchy past. She may have a point: not long before, the Hood is overheard telling Riri, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”

Audiences will soon be able to find out just how far they are willing to go to create an iconic legacy, and at what cost, in the upcoming series.

Marvel has confirmed the first three episodes of Ironheart will drop on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, followed by one new episode each week. While a second season has not yet been announced, such a possibility has not been ruled out should the show do well. In the meantime, fans can check out the trailer and a newly released behind-the-scenes featurette.
