South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) officials have announced that President Dr. John Watford will retire at the end of 2026. Dr. Watford informed the college of his decision to step down, marking the end of a 37-year tenure at the institution.

Longstanding Commitment to SGTC

Dr. Watford has been a part of SGTC since he began his career there, dedicating nearly four decades to its mission. Appointed President in April 2016 by Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Gretchen Corbin and the Technical College System of Georgia State Board, Dr. Watford served in several roles before becoming president. His career included positions such as Computer Information Technology instructor, Director of Information Technology, Director of Instruction, Vice President of Operations at the Crisp County Center, and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Reflecting on Leadership and Service

In his retirement announcement, Dr. Watford expressed gratitude for the experiences and relationships formed during his years at SGTC. “This decision is deeply personal and brings with it a tremendous range of emotions. For the past 37 years, this college has been far more than a place of employment for me. It has been a community, a calling, and an important part of my life,” he said.

He highlighted his appreciation for the students, faculty, staff, community partners, and supporters who contributed to the success of the college. Dr. Watford noted, “For the past 11 years, I have had the extraordinary privilege of serving as its President, and I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have led an institution that makes such a meaningful difference in the lives of our students, our communities and the workforce we serve.”

Honoring Dr. Watford’s Educational Career

To celebrate Dr. Watford's commitment to technical education and college leadership, South Georgia Technical College and the South Georgia Technical College Foundation will host a retirement reception in his honor. The event is scheduled for Thursday, December 3, 2026, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., as part of the SGTC Foundation’s annual Holiday Buffet. The reception will take place in the John M. Pope Center.

The Legacy of Service in Americus, Georgia

His leadership helped foster a strong connection with faculty, staff, trustees, community leaders, business partners, alumni, and—most importantly—the students whose growth and achievement have been a central focus throughout his tenure.

Looking Ahead
