Hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg has opened himself up to more criticism following a comment on the lack of LGBTQ+ representation in children’s movies. During an appearance on the It’s Giving podcast with Sarah Fontenot last week, the rapper gave some of his take on Pixar’s 2022 film Lightyear, which he watched with his grandson.

In the movie, a character in a same-sex relationship has a child with a partner, and a brief kiss scene between two women is featured prominently in an early trailer. Though that scene was removed in the initial release, it was later reinstated in the film after employees and activists called for stronger representation.

During his interview, Snoop shared a story about when his grandson asked him, mid-film, how the character was able to have a child with another woman. “Why, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, like, ‘Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman,” the rapper said on the podcast. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie.”

Snoop then shared that he had no answer for his grandson and advised him to watch on, adding: “They just said she and she had a baby. They both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with,” he continued. “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”

The rapper has now found himself at the center of a culture war among supporters and critics of his latest podcast interview. His description of Lightyear as a “gay movie” was met with disapproval among progressives, some of whom have since moved to boycott his scheduled performance at the Australian Football League’s (AFL) Grand Final later this year. However, the AFL has so far shown support for the rapper by confirming that he will be performing at the event. Australian outlet PinkNews reported that AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan spoke to the outlet about the singer’s scheduled appearance despite the backlash.

Lightyear’s Same-Sex Kiss Scene Has Caused Controversy

The rapper was not the first to make such claims about the inclusion of a same-sex relationship in the highly anticipated Toy Story spinoff. Conservatives also pushed back against the kiss scene that was featured in the early trailers, with many adults taking issue that a children’s film included any content that was not seen as completely “normie.”

The issue grew significant enough that Disney removed the scene from the film shortly after its release. However, the company decided to reinstate the controversial scene after it was reinstated due to Pixar employees’ and LGBTQ+ rights groups’ pushback against the decision to remove the brief sequence.

Chris Evans, who voices the title character in Lightyear, was one of the first to condemn those against the scene when speaking to Reuters Television at the time. “The real truth is those people are idiots,” Evans said. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”

The film, which was released in June 2022, featured an origin story that focused on Buzz Lightyear — the real space-age science-fiction hero who was not based on a toy. Pixar’s movie plays out in a fictional reality, and the Buzz Lightyear toy was based on this other character, who is central to the Lightyear story. Buzz, voiced by Evans, finds himself on a mission to protect the galaxy in the new film, which takes on a more traditional science-fiction adventure.

The film failed to break even on a global box office, earning less than $226 million against much higher expectations. Lightyear received an average score among critics, which shows it may have been too far out of the ordinary for fans of the Toy Story movies.

Snoop Dogg Responds to Comments on Instagram

Since the comments resurfaced on social media, Snoop has issued an Instagram video in response to the cultural war forming around his words. In a move to defend himself, the rapper aimed some of his more common critics, which include fellow entertainers.

“What the f—, is CNN, the BET Awards, Ellen DeGeneres looking at me like this?” he said in the Instagram video. “Y’all started this gay sh— nigga. Ever since f—ing Ellen was with Ellen, y’all been taking gay sh—!”
