Strange New Worlds S3 Explores Faith, Duty, and Romance
The wait for the new season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is finally over, as Paramount+ has released the official trailer for season 3 of the hit series. Announced to premiere on July 17, 2025, season 3 is one of the longest between seasons, with only a quick teaser trailer released back in April. The video includes footage from previous seasons as well as new clips for the season, giving fans a first look at the upcoming adventures of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Season 2 ended with a massive cliffhanger. The U.S.S. Enterprise was captured by the Gorn, who had invaded a Federation colony world. A number of the crew were forced into a shuttle and left with other hostages. Pike had to make a decision as to whether to obey Starfleet orders and retreat or stay and risk a rescue mission. As expected, he chose to save his crew and the others who were held hostage. Season 3 will pick up right after that moment in time, as the crew of the Enterprise will be in the thick of it all.
We last saw the Enterprise crew going up against the Gorn in last year’s season 2 finale. There were also brief glimpses of the new season at New York City Comic-Con in October, continuing directly from that scene. The footage showed a massive space battle, as the Enterprise crew took on a Gorn fleet. While the brief trailer did pick up with the rescue mission of season 2, fans were treated to new scenes and footage, teasing what is to come when season 3 premieres.
Based on this new trailer, it looks like the crew will find a way to win this new war on several levels. However, while it may be wrapping up the conflict with the Gorn, the Enterprise crew still has some rough times ahead of them. In addition to the Gorn, the crew will be at odds with a brand new villain who will challenge them in various ways.
The newest season will be a more definitive change in tone from past seasons, with only a handful of episodes focusing on pure Trek shenanigans. Instead, it will focus on faith, duty, romance, comedy, and a murder mystery. A lot will happen on this upcoming season with various members of the Enterprise crew, testing their commitment, courage, and everything else that makes them the best of Starfleet. According to Paramount+, other changes are in store in terms of its approach to genre elements and tone, different from most other Star Trek series.
In terms of the cast of the show, some returning main and recurring cast members will be back for season 3, reprising their roles as the Enterprise crew and others. As for the new cast members, one is the most anticipated as Cillian O’Sullivan has been added to the main cast. He will be portraying the character of Dr. Roger Korby, a past character from the original Star Trek series, portrayed by Michael Strong.
Set within the Strange New Worlds timeline, Korby is a famous archaeologist with a specific focus on medical archaeology and is the long-lost fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). His arrival at the Enterprise is sure to cause quite the ripple effect, as Chapel is now dating Spock (Ethan Peck).
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will also have Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt guest-starring on the new season. The April teaser trailer was played up towards the variety of genres that fans could expect from the new season. From heavier action-heavy episodes to some comedic side stories, fans of all genres will find something to enjoy.
In the trailer, some of the aforementioned teases are all shown as well. There are some fun and heartfelt moments of the Enterprise crew bonding. In another scene, a tentative romance subplot comes into play as Chapel and Spock share a more intimate moment. During another sequence, the Enterprise is in for a hell of a ride in an explosion from a science experiment gone wild.
The episode in which this is seen takes place towards the beginning of season 3, with James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) standing in for Pike in the captain’s chair, if only for a few minutes. While his role in the upcoming story is still a mystery, fans can expect this role to be important to Kirk’s character development in the long run. In this moment, Kirk is told by Pike, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”
Fans can also expect a comedy moment in the trailer, in what looks like a rare scene with Spock. In a very well-timed exchange, Spock is showing Oswalt’s Vulcan how to do a high five. After being asked to do it “down low,” Spock can pull it off, but it is the classic “too slow” move from Spock. The bewildered Vulcan asks Spock, “Why would you do that?” Spock simply replies, “Because you are too slow.”
