Wednesday Season 2 Gets Even Spookier with All-Star Cast

Netflix has given viewers the first look at Billie Piper as the latest addition to the cast of Wednesday season 2. In the official image, the 42-year-old British actor can be seen as Isadora Capri, a musical genius and the gothic-scarred head of music at Nevermore Academy.

The character is very similar to Piper’s gothic and supernatural roles from the past, including Brona Croft/The Bride of Frankenstein from Penny Dreadful. The description reads: “The former child prodigy takes an interest in Wednesday Addams’ musical abilities and mentors both Wednesday and werewolf student Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers).”

Viewers first saw Emma Myers’ Enid and the character’s dual identity as the resident werewolf this month, and now it looks like fans will be following the characters’ story further as season 2 launches in August.

Netflix shared the photo of Billie Piper as her character Isadora, alongside the big announcement that the record-breaking series would return. The series about Wednesday Addams was released last year in November 2022, and with over 252 million viewers worldwide, it became Netflix’s most popular English-language original series ever.

On the back of that success, the series was quickly renewed for a second season in January this year, which has now been given a premiere date. Wednesday will return in August for new episodes.

Wednesday Season 2 Plot – What We Know

Wednesday is a live-action reimagining of the Addams Family universe and shows the dark and rebellious world of 22-year-old Jenna Ortega’s character, Wednesday Addams. The show takes place at Nevermore Academy, a school for supernatural freaks. Wednesday is the continuation of the half-hour Friday night parody-episodes released in late 2021.

The series mixes horror, comedy, and teenage angst. The show was a critical and public success with fans and won an Emmy for its irreverent take on the Addams family. The new series will continue to follow Wednesday Addams as she adjusts to life as a junior high student at Nevermore Academy.

Season 3 Renewed + Spin-Off Being Discussed

Netflix not only revealed the identity of Billie Piper’s character but also shared even more exciting news. In addition to being renewed for a second season, Wednesday will now also get a third season. Not only that, but a spin-off series is also apparently already in early discussions.

The Hollywood Reporter, as shared by Tubefilter, notes: “Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are in discussions with Netflix to get started on a spin-off, and they have someone in mind to be the showrunner.” Co-creator Alfred Gough has also confirmed that a spin-off could be on the cards, telling the Reporter: “It’s something we’re doodling; there are other characters we can look at.”

The Wednesday season 2 renewal announcement has also been greeted with joy and excitement online. Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Wednesday’s mother, Morticia Addams, confirmed the renewal herself on Instagram: “When Wednesday comes, a better day. Wednesday season three. It’s official… we shall return.” Fans were quick to respond in the comments section with comments such as, “And for many more seasons”, and “I can’t wait to see the second season, I’m waiting for it with great curiosity… and the third is already official, fantastic news!”

Many fans were relieved that the show could get back to production quickly. Some worried that the gap between seasons and 3 could be even longer than this time around. Season 2 was announced in January 2023, and will still debut more than two years after the first season, which fans are pleading won’t happen again next time. One fan wrote, “I’ll be gripping the sheets in agony waiting, but please… don’t let us wait three years again.”

The 66-year-old Tim Burton will once again be returning to serve as executive producer and occasional director, with Burton having recently worked with Ortega on Beetlejuice, which is due out later this year and is a sequel to the 1988 original.

Wednesday season 2 also features an impressive new cast alongside Billie Piper. The new additions to the cast include Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton. Regular returning cast members include Gwendoline Christie as the headteacher, Larissa Weems, and Luis Guzmán, who plays Wednesday’s father, Gomez Addams.

Behind the Scenes of Wednesday Season 1

The new season also features Ortega in a more active role behind the scenes as a producer. The 22-year-old has had to jump in as a producer, following some controversy this year around a podcast interview. In the interview, she said that she had to “put my foot down a little bit” because she had to “change lines because of inconsistencies in her character”.

Director Tim Burton had to come out and defend the young actress, saying that her comments in the interview had been taken out of context and that he “strongly [supported] her decision” to speak about her experience. Ortega is reportedly very involved in the creative process and often offers feedback on scripts. Co-creator Alfred Gough added that the producer title “makes perfect sense” and said that Ortega “has been in on everything and more” behind the scenes on the show.

Joanna Lumley also can’t wait to join the cast of a show that she describes as a “cosmos of Burton”. She said, “There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they’ve created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating.”

Netflix renewed Wednesday for season 2 just days after the initial series release, and season 3 has been officially renewed. A spin-off series is also being discussed, so the universe is set to expand shortly. With Billie Piper now added to the cast for season 2, which is returning for new episodes this August, the wait for the series to return can begin.
